New York, NY – Already suffering from a hamstring injury and a problem filled season, New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will be out indefinitely after suffering non-life threatening gunshot wound to his right thigh. The apparently a self-inflicted accidental shooting is just one more step the one time star receiver has made towards destroying his career.
Burress, a major contributor to the Giants Superbowl winning season, signed a 25 million dollar contract with the club before the start of this season. Since then he has been suspended once, engaged in a shouting match with Coach Tom Coughlin on the sidelines, and missed multiple meetings and training sessions.
“Obviously, our primary concern is for Plaxico’s health,” the Giants said in a statement released by Pat Hanlon, the team’s vice president for communications. “We have been in touch with N.F.L. security on this matter. At this point, we are attempting to gather all the facts surrounding this incident. This incident could become a matter for law enforcement officials, and because of that, we have no comment on any of the details.”
While the self inflicted gunshot wound has come as a shock to many fans, others see this as just an audible in an otherwise standard mental and emotional breakdown.
“Athletes and celebrities go through this type of thing all the time. While a shooting is fairly unique, it’s not too far off from where other people have gone in the past,” said Scrape TV sports analyst Mark Marvins. “I mean I can’t even remotely understand the logic of a millionaire football player bringing a handgun to a nightclub, especially when he’s supposed to be rehabbing. When his fans are losing their homes and jobs he is sure showing a significant amount of disdain for the money they put into his pocket.”
Of course aside from the Giants organization, the fans, and Burress himself, the people who might be most hurt are the fantasy football fans who now find themselves stuck with a lame duck they can longer pawn off onto other players.
“I today’s age NFL players are rarely worth more than their status in Fantasy Football. The ever increasing number of fans who simply watch football in order better their fantasy status,” continued Marvins. “Burress is doing a major disservice to fantasy coaches across the country, well the ones who picked him anyway. Everyone else is laughing.”
Burress has made no comment on the shooting and it is not clear when or if he will return to the Giants line-up. Domenik Hixon will replace Burress in the line-up. He is not considered a suspect in the shooting.
“With the Giants being one of the best teams in football and having a serious shot, so to speak, at repeating as Superbowl champs this is the last kind of distraction they needed,” concluded Marvins. “Even in tough economic times apparently it’s difficult to find good help. Burress has done a bang-up job of ruining his career but also keeping the cliche alive and well.”
