MARK ZUCKERBERG STILL A LITTLE AFRAID OF GIRLS EVEN WITH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS
February 3 2012
Menlo Park, CA – Most people by now know the basic story of how Facebook got started in a college dorm room after founder Mark Zuckerberg was dumped by his girlfriend. That nascent version of the site, which was really just a way to be nasty to girls, would very quickly spawn what has become a multi-billion dollar company that has changed the tech world and, some would argue, could end up changing the real world forever.
On the precipice of the company offering its first public offering, something which will make the founders wealthier than they could have even fantasized about in that college room all those years ago, new revelations about the company itself have started to come forward and while they may not hurt the stock price, at least for now, they could speak to an intrinsic insecurity by some of the people at the top, particularly Zuckerberg himself.
The one notable concern that many people have brought up is the almost utter lack of women in high positions, and none on the Board of Directors, indicating that Zuckerberg, despite the billions of dollars he is about to earn, still feels a little uneasy around girls and would rather have as few of them around as possible.
“It’s surprising and disappointing that Facebook has zero female directors because Sandberg is so powerful at the company and so outspoken in favor of women advancing,” said Malli Gero, executive director of 2020 Women on Boards.
Facebook’s COO is Sheryl Sandberg who is a woman but is also old and married and possibly a lesbian, at least according to many inside Facebook.
It’s not clear how comfortable Zuckerberg feels around her but she will not be a part of the board anyways.
“Mark is fine with Sheryl most of the time as long as she sits a few seats away from him during meetings. He also likes to have other people in the room when she’s around. It just makes him more comfortable and we respect that because he’s the boss. Can’t argue with the boss,” said a female Facebook employee who preferred to remain anonymous. “I don’t like being around him very much because he is very awkward. He sweats a lot and he kind of looks without looking, you know, like he doesn’t know where to put his eyes. It’s a little uncomfortable. A lot of the top guys are like that.”
Zuckerberg has been in a long term relationship with a girl whom he met long before Facebook became huge.
“I like working for the company especially right now but it’s true that it’s not the most female friendly place in the world. They don’t do that ranking thing anymore, at least not so I’ve seen or heard, but it’s still a little immature and that makes it tough sometimes,” continued the insider. “I don’t want to talk out of turn because the place has been really good for me. Not so much for my love life, obviously, but it’s been a great working experience despite the sweatiness and looks.”
Zuckerberg’s sister did also work for the company for a while, though she is his sister.
