‘CRAIGSLIST KILLER’ OFFICIALLY HAS THE WORST WEEK EVER
May 1 2009
Boston, MA – Luck has many definitions. For some it is merely a logical fallacy; that a random series of events is somehow colluding to affect your life, whether positive or negative. For others it has religious or spiritual overtones; the idea that an unseen force is guiding one’s path. Still others believe that luck is a controllable event; that positive thinking or putting the right work in place will result in a positive outcome.
However a person defines it though, some people seem to have it and some people just don’t. Such is the case with Philip ‘Craigslist Killer’ Markoff.
It was only last week that the 23-year old medical student was arrested and charged with robbery and murder in connection with the death of 25-year old masseuse Julissa Brisman, whom he had contacted on the digital classifieds website ‘Craigslist’. That arrest, which has marked him as one of the most famous murderers of recent history, has also put a kink in his plans to marry fiancée Megan McAllister. Now word comes that Markoff has been evicted his apartment in just one more hiccup in a week that really couldn’t get much worse.
“There are all kinds of sayings regarding luck and people’s good or bad versions of it but there has been no verifiable evidence one way or the other that such a thing as luck even exists. Coincidence and circumstance are generally just that and to think that these things are somehow revolving around you is little more than vanity,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “There is some truth to the idea that you reap what you sow but that is not a result of fate or luck, it is simply a logical extension of the work that you have done. That said, some people seem to get a perpetually bad crop.”
Many though see Markoff’s arrest as less a circumstance of fate and but rather tied directly to his acts of robbery and murder. Regardless of the reasons, the erosion of his once apparently perfect life has had many questioning their own luck and circumstances.
“There was another case last week where a man in Oregon was fired from his job and returned home only to find that his house was on fire. The odds of those two things happening all at once have to be very high but that is the way circumstance occurs. You don’t meet the perfect mate because you happened to go out to a bar that one night, you clicked because you have similar interests and were
looking for the same thing. It isn’t fate, it’s practicality,” continued Welp. “That said occasionally these things come in bunches and that tends to defy most people’s sense of logic but there is a sensible reason even if you can’t immediately see it. In the case of Markoff, it really isn’t an issue of random chance making life difficult. Murder, led to capture, led to eviction. It’s really just simple cause an effect. The good news for Markoff is he at least won't be homeless for long.”
Word has also come that Markoff’s fiancée Megan McAllister has ended their engagement though it is not immediately clear if that was a result of the murder, the likelihood of imprisonment, or the loss of the apartment.
“In these hard economic times even finding a place to live can be a difficult thing. Many people are suffering from downsizing and when it comes to renting the reality is most can’t afford to live on their own. It’s perfectly reasonable to assume that the end of the relationship was due to his murderous ways, but the reality is McAllister is now going to have to find someplace new to live. When it comes to failed relationships the most common reason for separation remains money troubles. Murder is very far down that list,” continued Welp. “She does need to see the positive side of this though. Obviously Markoff wasn’t the right partner for her and now she can try her, if you will excuse the term, luck someplace else. I would recommend staying away from Craigslist though.”
It’s not immediately clear when the $1400 a month apartment will become available.
