NAACP BATTLES NEW YORK POST, CARTOONIST, IRONY

February 22 2009

New York, NY – There’s little doubt that the NAACP has been one of the most important and successful advocacy organizations in the United States. Since its founding over 100 years ago to the present day, the NAACP has changed the face of the nation, literally, and it is only fitting that their centennial year comes in the first year of President Barack Obama. Their advocacy has brought an entire race of people from second class citizens to nearly true equality and now the organization is using that power and influence the nature of free speech.  naacp logo

The organization has called The New York Post and parent company to fire cartoonist Sean Delonas after the paper published a controversial cartoon. The piece in question depicts a monkey and an allusion to it depicting President Obama. Many in the organization, as well as Reverend Al Sharpton, see the cartoon as racist and encouraging the assassination of the President and have called for punishment to those responsible.

“It’s easy to see that kind of rhetoric coming from Al Sharpton but the NAACP is a more established and more respectable entity and they really have a responsibility to be more responsible. monkey obama
The truck load of ironies here is remarkable and the organization is only bringing more attention than the cartoon would already have gotten. It was in The New York Post after all,” said Scrape TV Racism analyst Drake Douglas. “The NAACP is founded on the idea of equal rights and thankfully they are in the position now of determining what people should be able to say with those rights. That’s the mark of a successful organization and proves that they have become a full and formidable American institution. True they were founded by people using that same free speech but as time passes and organizations become beholden to their constituents, they are obligated to act ironically.”

Traditionally the equation of a chimp or monkey and a black person has been seen as racist. Such depictions were common place in the 1800’s and even into the 20th century but generations have done without that particular connection until these recent protests.bags of money

“It is ironic that they are bringing back into the public eye one of the most hated stereotypes in history but that may be part of their plan. The NAACP is at a crossroads now with a black President. They are finding themselves without the same level of influence or need in society and they need to do something to maintain their relevance, and bringing back racist stereotypes is exactly the right move,” continued Douglas. “Especially in these tough economic times corporations need to do whatever they can to keep people interested in their product and keep the money flowing. The NAACP has a lot going against it right now but if they can keep making clever moves like this they may be around for another hundred years.”

With protests in New York and the calls for blood becoming louder by the day, the parallels to the 2005 outrage over a Danish newspaper’s cartoon of the prophet Muhammad are very striking, and some say deliberate.Jyllands Posten Muhammed cartoon

“There is little doubt that that controversy lit a fire underneath Muslims the world over and the NAACP is no doubt using that as a template for these protests. It is unlikely that there will be violence or say someone trying to burn down the Post but we can all hope. When you stir up a populace it can have unintended consequences and violence is a very short step from where we are now,” continued Douglas. “For the NAACP that kind of action would be a boon to their bottom line, opening up a massive can of worms that only they themselves would be equipped to clean up. This has been a brilliant move by the organization and only time will tell if it’s as successful as the one by radical Islamists has been.”

So far the NAACP has not officially announced any further protests or racial controversies. No word yet if zoologists have planned action protesting chimpanzees being depicted as monkeys.
