D.C. SNIPER EXECUTION THE BEST IN DECADES
November 11 2009
Jarratt, VA – The process of execution has not been an easy thing in the modern era. Through the late 19th century and beyond there has been great debate in the United States and throughout the world as to the moral and ethical nature of
executing criminals. Even more compelling has been the argument that such punishment does little to actually prevent crimes, one of the primary goals of the criminal justice system. Through that debate, much of the western world has done away with that particular form of punishment but one, the United States, has held onto to the process for dear life.
That wasn’t always the case though. From 1972 to 1976 Capital Punishment was outlawed in the country and in many states has stayed that way. The majority of the country still practices the death penalty, though the majority have more people on death row than executed, ensuring that the debate will go on for a long time. Someone who was not spared in
the debate over the procedure is John Allen Muhammad, the so-called Beltway Sniper who in 2002, along with his accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, stalked the streets of Maryland, D.C., and Virginia, killing 16 and injuring four. His execution last night was long expected, little mourned, and according to reports one of the best in the state of Virginia in many years.
“The acts of John Allen Muhammad were some of the most despicable in our country’s long history. The malicious and diseased nature of the killings, as well as the incredible level of fear they created, all combined to bring us to this inevitability and Mr. Muhammad’s life to this end,” said a spokesperson for the Greensville Correctional Center. “That said, it was one of the cleanest and best executed executions that we have had for many years. Observers were orderly and Mr. Muhammad was completely compliant. The snacks were fresh and had a great variety and the night was so mild and refreshing that it just made things a whole lot easier. I have to say that this is the best execution that I have been involved with in almost twenty years.”
Though cloudy, the temperature outside the prison was a balmy 59° F (15° C) with little wind and 98% humidity, quite uncharacteristic for the middle of November. The snacks were procured from a small local deli and both water and coffee were served.
“I’ve been to a few executions and I would totally agree that this was one of the better ones that I have been involved with. I was at the Edward Bell execution in February and it was just cold, the food was terrible and everyone was in a bad mood. I guess they learned a lot from that day,” said Miles Frobisher, a reported for the Washington Post. “I would have liked to have seen some egg salad sandwiches to be honest, but the selection they had was pretty good. The ham on whole wheat in particular was really good. They used real Mayo instead of Miracle Whip and I think they had just a little bit of dill and some honey mustard sauce. Excellent and I can’t wait for the next one.”
Virginia is currently second behind Texas in the number of executions. Cases in that state have long been renowned for their down home hospitability and efficiency.
“Naturally the system in Texas is going to be more refined than any other state. Just by virtue of repetition, they are going to make certain aspects of the process much easier and smoother. As far as food and drink goes, well Texans are known for eating and they aren’t going to let something like death get in the way of that so I think other states are going to have a hard row trying to beat them there,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “This very well could have just been the perfect confluence of events. One thing is for sure; they won’t be doing many executions in the winter anymore. That is one area southern states like Texas will always have an advantage. This execution though proves that more northern states can play with the big boys and it will prove to be a major statement in the history of capital punishment.”
Muhammad apparently also his final meal, the contents of which were not publicly released.
