NEW STARS GET A CHANCE TO SHINE ON UPDATED FBI TEN MOST WANTED LIST

October 24 2009

Washington, D.C. – As the story goes the FBI’s ten most wanted fugitives list was born over a game of hearts between J. Edgar Hoover and the editor of the precursor of the UPI. That fateful card game would lead to, only a few months later, the j edgar hoover
introduction of the list which would come to be synonymous with law enforcement and spawn an era of popular crime fighting like nothing else in the history of the United States.

With hundreds of films and the ongoing success of ‘America’s Most Wanted’ promoting the capture of criminals, the Ten Most Wanted list remains the gold standard for both crime fighters and criminals alike. Despite that little has been done to update the list in the nearly sixty years since its release. Though the list has been readily available on the web for many years, the protocols and procedures that place a criminal on the list has been more or less the same since its inception. Now though the FBI has shaken up that perception of lack of change, adding three fresh faces to the list, finally giving them the shot at infamy that so many have desired.warren jeffs captured

“The criminals on this list have always represented the worst of the worst of human behaviour and they need to be brought to justice. This list has long provided the FBI and local law enforcement agencies across the United States with an indispensible tool for tracking down these dangerous criminals,” said a spokesperson for the FBI. “As such, we have been able to bring a number of these men to justice which allows us more room on the list, which we believe will ultimately make the United States and the world a much safer place. These new additions to the list are an exciting group that we feel a very much in line with past choices but also look towards the future, adding a new dimension to this stalwart of crime fighting.”

The new additions to the list are embezzler Semion Mogilevich, drug trafficker Eduardo Ravelo, and possible serial killer Joe Saenz. The FBI is touting the diversity of the selections as a sea change in the attitude taken towards the list which has long been criticized for its slow move towards the modern diversity of crime.james whitey bulger

“For years we have been seeing the same faces over and over again on this list which frankly is a little boring. Someone like Osama bin Laden has to remain on the list for obvious reasons but people like James Bulger, as bad as he is, is likely going to die soon if that hasn’t already happened. Keeping him on the list for all these years just means that a young criminal loses a spot,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “The top ten list is something that many young criminals aspire to and will do anything it takes to get on. That means, unfortunately, that some will continue to commit crimes in order to enhance their reputation, which means a lot more innocent people will suffer because the FBI is too stubborn to modernize.”

Police agencies from across the United States have long pleaded with the bureau to update the facility of the list, revolving criminals on a regular basis, something they have been very reticent to do.americas most wanted logo

“I think the fear, or at least part of it is, that if they add too many names to the list they risk confusing the audience which will cause a split in focus. The list has been extremely successful and actually resulted in the arrests of the majority of the people who have been placed on it so they are doing something right. Of course that success could also be the undoing of the list itself,” continued Weston. “Frankly they have a reputation to protect and they need to ensure the viability of the list as a marketing tool. That means they choose the people who are on it very carefully, perhaps too carefully. They choose people they suspect they will be able to catch, they make safe choices, leaving many other criminals free to operate.”

The FBI made no comment on any potential future changes to the list.
