Ontario, CA – A surge in teen pregnancies over the last five years forced a local school board into making a difficult decision. After meetings with school principals and the PTA the board voted to install condom machines in the bathrooms of every school in the district. Not surprisingly, this decision has caused a wide and varied reaction.
Planned Parenthood representative Shelley Atkins, “It is the smartest decision the board has ever made. We have a responsibility to protect our children and react to them in the way they behave, not the way in which we would like them to behave.”
Local minister Rev. Harold Anderson has a different view. “This is a blatantly immoral decision. It is an attempt by the board to band aid a solution to a difficult problem. Had they taken the proper steps to teach our children properly, by teaching abstinence, we would not be in this state today. It’s typical of a government organization to take the easy route rather than the correct one.”
Polls amongst students seem to indicate no significant increase in sexual activity, and it will take time before it can be proven whether or not there has been a reduction in birth rates, but it does seem to not go unnoticed by the students themselves.
“It makes things a lot easier,” said one female student who preferred to remain anonymous, “I’m way more likely to use condoms now because I don’t have to go into the store to get them. It just makes things a lot easier.”
But the move is drawing the opposite reaction from one group of students. Ethan Howard, head of the Students for Equality organization is a harsh critic. “I keep hearing that having these machines is supposed to increase sexual behavior. I haven’t seen it yet. I went to this school before we had these machines and I go now, and I still haven’t had sex.”
And he’s not alone. A growing number of students have joined his organization, decrying what they see as lies pushed on them. “In our opinion, it is a scam; a way to make money off students by promising them something and not delivering. I go in and spend my hard earned money on a condom, and it gets me nowhere. All they are doing is taking my money. It’s criminal.”
His organization has begun putting together protest marches, pamphlet campaigns, and is considering pursuing legal action. “I’ve contacted my local congressman but as yet he hasn’t back to me. We will push and push until this fraud is exposed and the machines are taken out of our schools.”
Congressman Bernard Fulton responded to our inquiry regarding Mr. Howard’s phone call, “I don’t talk to losers. Tell him to take a shower and go talk to a girl.”
It appears as though this battle isn’t going to over anytime soon. “We can’t let them win. We need to fight for us, and for those that come after us.” Added Howard.
