Denver, CO – Three men arrested in an apparent plot to assassinate Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama appear to have been less of a threat and more of a group of meth addicts in need of driving lessons.
Shawn Robert Adolf, Tharin Gartrell, and Nathan Johnson were taken into custody early Sunday after Gartrell was spotted weaving down the road in a rented van. Inside police found weapons, drugs, and fake ID’s which led to the men being taken into custody. So far the men have not been charged with conspiracy.
"The law recognizes a true threat - one that can be carried out - from the racist rantings of drug abusers," Denver U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said. "But we'll keep an open mind as we continue to look at this. It would have been a lot harder to catch them if Gartrell hadn’t been such a lousy driver. Let that be a lesson to all young people out there, drive sober, drive safe."
Indeed that may be the most significant development to come out of the arrest. Officials think it very unlikely that despite their intent that the three men would actually have been able to go through with an assassination.
“They have said that they wanted to kill Obama. Specifically they said that they couldn’t believe how close he had had come to becoming President,” said a spokesperson for the Colorado State’s Attorney office. “They said they wanted to kill him because he was black. While I’m sure that’s a sentiment shared by a number of Americans, very few of them would go as far as these three apparently went. Of course most of the population aren’t drug addled losers either.”
Because of the way in which the three men were caught, Mothers Against Drunk Driving have begun to see this incident as an example of how damaging driving under the influence can be.
“While of course we are not advocating assassination or murder in any shape or form, the simple truth of the matter is that these men had a plan that was derailed by driving while under the influence,” said a spokesperson for the organization. “What they were trying to do may not have been the best thing in the world, but the core issue remains. If they had been sober they would have accomplished their goals. Not only does driving under the influence potentially kill people, it’s obvious that it can hurt your goals in life. We see this as a crystal clear example of how drunk driving can ruin your lives, and the lives of those around you.”
The spokesperson also went on to say that they were looking at potential advertising partnerships with the three men, once their legal troubles are out of the way.
