JAWS REMAKE TO TAKE FRESH BITE OUT OF MOVIE-GOERS

March 21 2009

Los Angeles, CA – It’s been a long, long time between meals. Over twenty years since he last took a bite from movie-goers it’s rumoured that Bruce the Shark is coming back to feed once again. It was way back in 1987 that Jaws last took a bite from filmgoers with the underwhelming ‘Jaws the Revenge’ but if filmmakers have their way, the mighty great white will once again be taking a chunk out of movie-goer’s wallets.jaws steven spielberg shark

“Jaws has been and continues to be one of the biggest entertainment properties in the history of film. Since its release in 1975, Jaws and its sequels have thrilled, entertained, and terrified moviegoers the world over,” read the official press release, in part. “Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are thrilled to announce a new exploration of the Jaws franchise with a reimagining of Steven Spielberg’s classic film. This new vision for the Jaws franchise will bring terror and excitement to a whole new generation of fans.”Jaws the ride 1

The press release also stated that a script was in the early stages of development as is the search for talent. Rumours have already begun to swirl that ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake director Marcus Nispel is hungrily pursuing the director’s seat.

“Remakes are in and doing very well. With the economy the way it is all companies are looking for a sure things and the closest thing to that you can get in movies is remaking a revered classic. This will be an interesting test because the majority of successful remakes have been of either foreign language films or genre hits. One allows people who have Jaws the ride difficulty reading enjoy the same story, and the other exploits captive dollars,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “’Jaws’ is a little more mainstream and therefore has to appeal to a much larger audience to have real success. That’s a difficult prospect when the film is considered a classic though it has been done before, ‘Scarface’ of course being the best example of that.”

Though no new plot details have been released, rumours of possible casting choices have already sparked fierce debate and biting speculation as to the direction the new storyline will take, as well as the rationale behind such unusual choices.malcolm-jamal warner

“The big rumours at the moment involve Malcolm Jamal-Warner and Kadeem Hardison. That indicates they are going in a much different direction depending of course on which roles they are being looked at to fill. From what I understand the area of the world the original took place in is still mostly white so we could be looking at a whole new setting for the story,” continued Temple. “Word is they have also been speaking to Lorraine Gary to make an appearance which would be quite a coup. Not only would it add some continuity to the series, but it would be a triumphant return for the actress who really hasn’t appeared on screen since her last Jaws appearance.”

Gary played Ellen Brody in the original film as well as in ‘Jaws: The Revenge’. Malcolm-Jamal Warner made his name starring as ‘Theo Huxtable’ on ‘The Cosby Show’ while Kadeem Hardison starred as Dwayne Wayne in the Cosby spin-off ‘A Different World’. kadeem hardison

“If those casting rumurs are correct than they must have a specific result in mind. None of those actors are particularly big names nor highly regarded actors and it will be an uphill battle for them to fill the shoes of Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss,” continued Temple. “The one thing the remake does have going for it is the advances in technology over the last twenty years. The shark will no doubt look better, though I doubt it will make anyone act better. Hopefully if Nispel does take on the job he’ll employ the same philosophy that Spielberg did with the original, only the opposite. It might be best to keep the shark on the screen as much as possible and leave the actors in those incredibly dark shadows he seems to like so much.”

According to a Universal insider both companies believe they will be able to make ‘all kinds of money’ off the remake. Previous plans for a remake from 'Old Boy' director Chan-Wook Park appear to have been masticated.
