PHIL SPECTOR TO CREATE WALL OF SOUND IN PRISON CELL
April 14 2009
Los Angeles, CA – There’s little doubt that Phil Spector has had an enormous influence on popular music. His creation of the so-called ‘Wall of Sound’ style of music production forever changed the sound of music from, an influence that has lasted from its earliest inception to the modern day. His work with ‘The Ronettes’, ‘The Beatles’, ‘The Ramones’, and John Lennon produced some of the most influential
albums of all time. Now, with his conviction for second-degree murder and the prospect of spending the next 15 years in prison, Spector is going back to doing what he does best.
Spector’s conviction comes almost exactly 5 years after actress Lana Clarkson was found shot to death in his Alhambra Mansion. The first trial for the producer ended in a dead-locked jury but after 30 hours of deliberation, the newest jury was able to knock-out a hit. Spector has been largely absent from the producing scene in recent years. Outside small productions the once dominant hit maker last struck gold with 1980’s ‘End of the Century’ by The Ramones. Now though the 69-year old is getting back to his roots.
“Sometimes adversity can be turned into triumph and that may exactly be what’s in store for Spector. It’s entirely possible that somewhere deep in his subconscious he shot Clarkson on purpose just to give him more time to concentrate on music. He hasn’t exactly been the most rational of people and it could be that he needed something to jolt him back to earth,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “With 15 years of virtual solitude he will have the chance to clear his head and get back to what he’s good at because obviously murder isn’t really his forte.”
It’s unclear what artists Spector could be looking at working with for future productions. His reputation for irrational behaviour has sapped a number of opportunities in the past but the restrictions on weapons inside prison may make artists a little more inclined to work with the producer.
“As an example of his erratic behaviour he once threatened Leonard Cohen with a crossbow in a recording session. That isn’t exactly the kind of thing that most artists line up to be a part of but the separation of prison bars and the presence of armed guards may prompt a few people to put aside their concerns. God knows that the music industry could use a boost right now, even if it is from a convicted murderer,” continued Temple. “There will of course be significant logistical issues to setting up a studio inside a prison as they are generally not built for that but perhaps Spector could innovate that as well. A kind of bars of sound.”
The majority of prisons throughout the United States have significant restrictions on the nature and quantities of personal effects allowed for prisoners. Many celebrity prisoners are afforded special status but thus far no prisoner in the California prison system has been allowed to bring in all the necessary equipment to set up a fully fledged professional recording studio.
“It’s unlikely that Spector would be willing to work with anything but top of the line equipment and that may be difficult to satisfy in prison. Aside from the space, prisons aren’t built with acoustics in mind and that could be a major obstacle,” continued Temple. “One also shouldn’t dismiss the idea that his oddness is a part of his creative soul. That without all the paranoia and gunplay he wouldn’t be the genius that he is and if you were to extract that something fundamental would be lost. It’s even more unlikely that they will allow prisoners access to guns even if it’s in the name of making music.”
It is expected that at the very least Spector will be given access to a selection of wigs while in prison.
