MIRAMAX ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RELEASE ‘CLEAN’ VERSION OF PULP FICTION

October 10 2008

Los Angeles, CA – Miramax has announced plans to re-release the classic Quentin Tarantino film ‘Pulp Fiction’ for its Fifteenth anniversary next year. The Disney owned imprint plans to release both the original film and a cleaned up ‘PG’ version of the film for broader audience appeal.pulp fiction poster

“We are pleased to announce that ‘Pulp Fiction’ will be back in theatres this next year just in time for its anniversary. We will have two versions of the film in release. The original r-rated version of the movie will be available in limited release. In wider release will be what we are calling the ‘Studio Cut’. We are aiming to have that version in most theatres at a PG rating,” said the company in a statement. “Pulp Fiction is one of the greatest films in our formidable catalog and it is a pleasure to reintroduce it to viewers who originally saw it in theatres, and introduce it for the first time to younger audiences.”

The studio said that it was working hard to get the film in shape and trying to secure participation from the original players for the re-release. They also stated that the ‘clean’ version of the film will have all of the violence, drug use, and profanity excised. The edited version would also have a reduced running time because of the excisions.

“We’re looking at about 65-70 minutes long which is a bit down from the 154 minutes of the original release. That will give us the added advantage of more screenings, though we are looking into shooting a few new scenes just to kind of flesh things out a little bit,” said a spokesperson for the company. “And yes, we will definitely show you what was in the case. Not telling you what was in it yet, but it rhymes with honey, and we’ll be making plenty of it.”greedo shoots first

So far none of the principles involved in the film have commented on the re-release. Company founders and Tarantino backers Bob and Harvey Weinstein left Miramax in 2005 and founded The Weinstein Company after repeated debates and confrontations with parent company Disney. Many of their stable of filmmakers including Tarantino and writer/director Kevin Smith departed with them. The participation of such principles seems unlikely, as does the participation of the stars of the film including John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, and Uma Thurman, all of whom have remained loyal to Tarantino.

“It seems they are trying to Disney-fy the movie and I just don’t see that is going to work. Re-edits of classic films have happened before – Star Wars, E.T., Apocalypse Now—but not only were those changes made by the original creators, they at least attempted to improve the film, however misguided that turned out to be,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Here they seem to be trying to cash in on a classic and are butchering it in order to make some quick coin, and in the process taking away everything that makes the movie what it is. I can’t even imagine what the fan boy reaction is going to be. Good luck Disney.”
The Mouse House though seems unconcerned about the reaction of fans to the re-edited version of the movie.

“We’re giving the fan boys a limited release; they’ll get what they want. Let’s get this straight though,” continued the spokesperson. “We aren’t re-releasing this for the fans, we’re doing this to make money and we have to figure out the best way for us to do that. This isn’t about the fans, it isn’t about the movie. This is about us making money. Let’s keep things in a little perspective here.”quentin tarantino with gun to head

The company plans to release both versions of the film October 8 2009 where it will likely compete with Tarantino’s newest film ‘Inglorious Bastards’.

“I can’t imagine a better title for its competition,” continued Temple. “John Travolta’s career must be turning over in its grave.”
