Indianapolis, IN – Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning has joined forces with weplay.com to advocate the inclusion of American Football as an official Olympic sport. The petition, available here, is intended to push the International Olympic Committee to include the sport for the 2012 games in London.
“...Football has never qualified as an Olympic sport, which is completely bogus,” said Manning. “Now you may say that many countries don’t play football, but that makes it even easier then, right?”
The petition is due in part to the exclusion of baseball and softball from upcoming Olympic Games, making it ever more difficult for American athletes to win gold medals.
“The IOC has seemingly made a decision to push the United States out of medal contention, though we know that is not their intent the decisions they are making seem to accomplish exactly that,” said a spokesperson for weplay. “In the days of increased competition, we should be making it easier for the United States to win Olympic gold not harder, which is why we are pushing for football to be included.”
While the American Olympic Federation has made no comment on the push, having such a prestigious person such as manning advocating the sport’s inclusion seems to indicate that the company is very serious. What they haven’t addressed though is the logistics and safety concerns that would need to be resolved before the sport could become official.
“There are a significant number of hurdles that the IOC would have to overcome in order to include football,” said Scrape TV sports analyst Mark Marvins. “For example, you can realistically only play one game every six days or so, allowing for recovery. Would they extend the length of the Olympics to say two months? What about competition. There is only one other country in the world that has a significant number of professional players (Canada), and they aren’t really all that good. Football is a violent sport, maybe the only other countries that would be able to field a team would be those that also play rugby. It’s going to be an upward battle, that’s for sure.”
Of course the inclusion of Football would also bring other predominately American sports to the discussion. Would NASCAR be next? Bowling? Professional wrestling? Television? Shooting stuff? The possibilities seem endless.
“We are fans of anything that will bring the gold to American necks, even if it means breaking the necks of all the other countries,” continued the weplay spokesperson. “It’s fundamentally important that America stays on top of the medal count no matter what. Hopefully the IOC will see that as well.”
IOC officials did not reply to our calls.
